Globally, the area under sunflower has increased significantly in recent years, and the crop’s share in crop rotation is forecast to grow further. Currently, sunflower is the fourth largest oilseed crop in the world. In Europe, France, Spain, Hungary, Romania, Russia, and Ukraine have led the way in sunflower cultivation. Still, sunflowers are becoming increasingly popular in other parts of Europe, including Poland, and are a good alternative to more demanding crops. Sunflower is classified as a tall crop, which can easily lodge under strong winds and heavy rains. Plant lodging can lead to irreversible mechanical damage and associated yield losses. Growth and development regulators are substances that effectively counteract lodging while modifying plants’ physiological and morphological characteristics. These substances are widely used, mainly in cereal crops. There are few scientific reports on common sunflower plants’ use of retardant growth regulators. This paper aims to review the available scientific literature on the effects of popular retardants on sunflower plants.
